Marsh Creek State Park

About The Park:
Marsh Creek State Park is in the rolling hills of northcentral Chester County. The 1,727-acre park contains the 535-acre Marsh Creek Lake, which is great for fishing, sailing and is a rest stop for migrating waterfowl.  But that's not all... In addition to a beautiful serene creek, Marsh Creek also boast many recreational opportunities such as swimming in a handicap accessible L shaped pool. horseback riding, picnic areas, hiking, fishing and sledding in the winter.  Only 45 minutes away from Philadelphia, Marsh Creek State Park is perfect for day trips.

Our Experience:
Planning our getaway was easy.  We planned on utilizing the picnic area, and spending some time on the lake in a boat rental.  However, once we arrived our plans changed.  We spent most of the afternoon in the pool($7.00 for a day pass, per person).  After swimming, we cooked out on one of the available grills before heading back for more water play.  Overall the entire trip (minus gas) costs us $31.70 (28$ for 4 swim passes, and $3.70 on tolls round trip).  Not bad for a day trip.

Our Advice:
  • Get There Early.  We arrived around noon, and most of the picnic areas were already taken;
  • Bring Chairs.  The Pool area allows lawn/beach chairs which make soaking up the sun much more comfortable.  The pool also has a covered "veranda" which is available for rental.  It contains grilling and picnic areas - just imagine a pool side party;
  • Don't forget the essentials.  I'm not sure what I was thinking (or not thinking) but I forgot sunscreen, insect repellent, and tablecloths. I am certain that a roll of Paper towel would have come in handy as well;
  • Bring The Family.  While we enjoyed ourselves, something tells me we would have had more fun with more family in attendance (which is rare for me to say/think).  Marsh Creek State Park is definitely a place the whole family would enjoy.  Swimming for the kids, hiking with the cousins, boating for the grandparents, grilling for the guys, and sun bathing for the gals.  Marsh Creek has something for everyone!
Our Rating:
We give Marsh Creek State Park 3 1/2 stars out of 5.  This rating is based on the fact that we did not fully experience all that the park had to offer.  We are already planning on returning to take advantage of the boat rentals and possibly horseback riding.  I definitely recommend Marsh Creek State Park as a fun and easily accessible alternative for families in the Philadelphia area looking for quick getaways that the entire family would enjoy.
